Li Xiaochuan

— Jazz trumpet player, composer and teacher, and one of China's most recognized jazz musicians of the past ten years.

Li Xiaochuan started his professional music career at the age of 11. He studied classical music and graduated from the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2005. As a student, he was a member of the Shanghai Conservatory Youth Orchestra. After his first jazz concert in 2004, he joined the Shanghai Jazz Orchestra and performed at various festivals as its member. Later, Li Xiaochuan studied at the University of North Texas and became the first Asian jazz musician to receive the Richard Dalrymple Memorial Jazz Trumpet Scholarship. During his years in the US, the musician performed alongside such stars as Billy Drummond, Mike Pope, Uri Caine and many others. In 2009, he put together his own band, the Li Xiaochuan Quartet. In March 2011, he became the finalist in the Jazz Division of the prestigious National Trumpet Competition of the United States. The same year, double bass legend Eddie Gomez invited Li Xiaochuan to play in his new quintet on the Asian tour.
